How to grow an online community that actually shows up
· 7 min read
Most communities are not short of members. They are short of moments where members are in the same place at the same time.
Pick one recurring time and defend it
A community with one reliable weekly room beats one with five sporadic events. Attendance compounds when people can plan around it.
Make the room public and easy to find
Public rooms are discoverable, so newcomers can find you without an invite. Share the same link every week so it becomes muscle memory.
Recruit co-hosts before you need them
A host who cannot miss a week burns out. Promote co-hosts who can start the room, moderate and keep the night running.
Moderate early, visibly and calmly
Mute, remove and ban tools exist so one bad participant does not cost you five good ones. Using them early sets the tone.
Vary the activity, keep the room
Rotate between watch parties, music, trivia and open chat inside the same room. The consistency people attach to is the room, not the format.
